Global Recycling Day - Celebrating Sustainability

Global Recycling Day, celebrated annually on March 18th. Like many other annual environmental days celebrated throughout the year, Global Recycling Day was founded with the intention of raising public awareness. But, more than that, it is a call to action and a validation that everyone can make a difference. Whether that be a single individual, a corporation or a government, we can all advocate for change. A universal commitment to recycling can dramatically slow global warming and climate change.

This year's activities include community-based recycling drives and clean-up drives. Also, workshops around the country are intended to inspire and enhance ongoing initiatives. Educating all who participate in the importance of sustainable practice is essential to future success. Learning what is, (and is not) recyclable is extremely important. As is, remaining diligent in proper disposal of these items. In addition, making smart purchase decisions based on the environmental impact of the products we buy can reduce landfill waste.

I am old enough to remember the first ever Earth Day celebration when I was a child. It was memorable because schools were encouraged to make this day an educational experience. The fact that I so clearly remember this specific day in 1970 is telling. It's a testament to the impactful role teachers can play in influencing young minds. This year, schools throughout the country are organizing similar initiatives. The hope here is that they too can influence and inspire future generations to take an active role in protecting our environment.

This year's Global Recycling Day theme includes recognition of individuals and organizations whose contributions have impacted their communities. The Recycling Hero's campaign honors those who have shown unwavering commitment to recycling efforts in their areas. Showcasing award recipients' accomplishments is yet another way to encourage greater community participation.

Global Recycling Day presents a great opportunity for entire communities to engage in productive conversation and actions leading to a cleaner environment. Continuing to educate and encourage environmental involvement is key to continued long term sustainability.
